    When to use the change puzzle - a diagnostic and planning tool.

    The Change Puzzle is a systems thinking tool that is used by OD professionals, change consultants, leaders, strategists, performance improvement, and project leaders to:

    • Diagnose a complex problem within an organization or team.
    • Prepare an organization for change. 
    • Help an operational team to understand strategic and organizational development issues that need to be focused on to improve organizational performance.
    • Do a cultural audit of an organisation. Identify the future culture an organization needs to support its strategy.
    • Replace lengthly employee surveys with a participative workshop tool that collects the same information in a quicker, more positive, more engaging way.
    • Understand the impact of a change on all the elements within an organization.
    • Understand what else needs to change within an organization to implement a new strategy, project or change successfully.
    • Plan to align structures, processes, systems and culture to support a new organizational strategy.
    • Plan to implement a vision or strategy.
    • Plan to implement a major change, system or project.
    • Plan to roll-out organizational values. Plan to translate organizational values into behaviors.

    The Change Puzzle was developed by Ruth Tearle who has 25 years experience in helping organisations to implement their strategies, solve complex OD problems, and train internal change consultants. With The Change Puzzle, OD consultants and facilitators can achieve months of research, survey and analytical work needed to diagnose an organizational problem, in a simple one-day workshop.

    How the change puzzle works:

    The Change Puzzle Kit consists of:

    • Two laminated charts (A1 size measuring 841mm x 594mm or 33.1 x 23.4 inches). Plus a set of water soluble overhead projector pens. Groups write directly onto the laminated charts. The charts can be wiped cleaned and used again
    • A box with 40 clue cards containing questions about your current and future organisation or division. These cards will get your groups to think creatively as they complete each chart.

    You will need 1 puzzle kit for every 8-10 delegates (or small group) on a workshop.

    What the Change Puzzle will help you to do

    Use The Change Puzzle to get a group, or groups to:

    • Diagnose problems and issues in their own organization or team.
    • Achieve a common understanding of where the organization or team is today.
    • Achieve a common understanding of what the implications of the future change, strategy, system or project will mean to the organization or team. (An impact analysis.)
    • Do systems thinking. Understand what needs to be in place for the organization or team to achieve the benefits they want.
    • Agree on a few focused core changes or OD interventions, that will help the organisation or team to be successful in the future.
    • Feel excited and committed to making those changes or interventions work.
    • Accept and get excited about the need for change. 
    • The biggest benefit of the Change Puzzle is that it allows a team to achieve agreement on changes or interventions that need to be made, without conflict, personal attacks, lengthy debates or over analysis of issues.
