OD intervention: Creative scenario activity

12-May-2014

A creative way to get a group to develop a scenario that describes the future environment within which they will operate.

A scenario is a picture of the future as if it were occurring today. In creating a scenario of the future, a team considers the political, social, economic, technological, business and industry trends occurring at a predetermined future date.

OD-interventionOne of the challenges leaders face, is getting people to see the need for change.

People often think that the future is just a continuation of the present - that what works today, is likely to work in the future. That is why it is often so difficult to get people to change their paradigms.

  • When a group creates their own scenario of the future, they see for themselves how the future may be different from today.  And when a group identifies the new rules for being successful within the scenario that they created, they can understand why and what will need to change in their organizations.
  • This practical OD intervention provides you with a right brain creative exercise. One that encourages a group to think beyond their normal paradigms, and to imagine a future that is different from today.
  • The quality of a scenario is affected by a groups knowledge of trends. This activity shows you how to encourage the group to think about existing trends. Then the right brain exercise gets the group to think about how these trends are likely to develop in the future, in a fun, creative way.

This is a practical activity - ideal for workshops and conferences. It is a popular activity in strategy, change or Organizational Development workshops. It energizes a group, and gets them excited about the future.
