OD intervention: Rebuild morale after a restructure11-Apr-2014
This short OD intervention is designed as a first step towards rebuilding morale after an organizational restructure. It allows people to share how they are feeling and to recognize they are not alone.Use this intervention as a first step to rebuilding morale and trust after an organizational restructure with:
- Existing teams. People remaining in a team after many of their colleagues have been retrenched.
- Newly formed teams after an organizational restructure.
- Any team that has been through a major change and now shows signs of poor morale.
You can't demand that your team feels positive when they don't.
But you can help them to deal with how they feel in a positive way.
After an organizational restructure, many people have to deal with feelings that they don't understand. These could include feelings of anger, betrayal, feeling lost, losing confidence, and even feeling guilty that they survived when others were retrenched.
If they don't deal with their feelings, they will begin to feel tired, anxious, weary, demotivated, and alone. Within time, this affect the morale of the whole team.
However many people feel uncomfortable talking about feelings.
This right brain exercise is a powerful way of getting individuals and groups to express themselves honestly, without feeling vulnerable or embarrassed.
By doing this activity, people discover that others feel the same way they do. They recognize that they are not alone. They begin to understand that there is nothing wrong with them. That the way they feel is natural.
This honest sharing starts the process of rebuilding trust in your team.
